Foundation Programme - Assessor Training

An overview of the content of the 1-hour training sessions is provided below.  Dates for training sessions delivered in Hospital Trusts are organised via Hospital Postgraduate Education Centres.  To enquire about available dates and/or organise new training dates please contact your Trust or Jocelyn Hewitt at the Deanery.

 

Foundation Programme Assessment and Assessor Update - training session overview
“Giving Good Feedback”

A short course for Assessors of Foundation Doctors – “Meeting the Minimum requirements for Assessments and Assessors of Foundation Doctors”.  This short course is delivered by Jocelyn Hewitt Teaching and learning Tutor. Jocelyn has a background in clinical skills, assisting with the development of teaching and learning programmes in NET Trusts.

Dates, times and locations: can be obtained from your Hospital Trust or from Jocelyn Hewitt.
Session length:  60-90 minutes
Fee: none
Venue: sessions will take place in London/other Trusts.

This session is designed to meet London Deanery training requirements for assessors
of Foundation Doctors by:
• Defining the minimum requirements for assessments and assessors of Foundation Doctors working within the London Deanery.
• Ensuring that all assessors of Foundation Doctors are familiar with the desired standard required.

Session focus is on Assessment process and giving structured feedback to Foundation Doctors completing Workplace-based assessment.

Course aims
• To visit/provide an overview of the purpose of Workplace-based assessment
• Look at the assessment tools used in the Foundation Programme
• For candidates to recognise the ‘learning effect’ that structuring and delivering feedback effectively achieves.
• To provide an overview of level of performance expected of a Foundation Doctor
• Highlight the usefulness of teaching in practice/providing Foundation Doctors with tips for improving clinical practice.
• To use case discussions to explore first line management of concerns about a Foundation Doctor
• To explore issues of fairness and equality of opportunity as they arise.

This course contributes towards the following area of the London Deanery Professional development framework for Supervisors.
