E-Learning for Clinical Teachers
Training for Assessors of Foundation Doctors
The London Deanery produced the guidance document "Minimum Requirements for Assessments and Assessors of Foundation Doctors” in April 2009, available on the main London Deanery website. The purpose of this document is to ensure that Foundation Doctors working with the London Deanery are assessed to the same standards. All Assessors of Foundation Doctors will need to provide evidence of training (or verification of standard achieved) for the following 5 areas:
a. Principles of workplace-based assessments
b. Assessment tools and methodology
c. Giving effective feedback
d. The Foundation Programme Curriculum
e. Equality and Diversity
From August 2009 each Local Education provider (LEP) is required to have a process in place that validates the knowledge and skills of those assessing Foundation Doctors.
• Once the recognised training has been undertaken (or it has been agreed by the LEP’s TPD that the Assessor meets the required standard without additional training) it is not necessary to repeat the training.
• Although, it is expected that Assessors will review their assessment skills regularly and provide portfolio evidence. Once training/review is complete, the Assessor will receive confirmation from the TPD/Postraduate Centre Manager that he/she meets the required standard which should be retained in his/her portfolio.
• The Assessors name will then be placed on the list of approved Assessors for Foundation Doctors kept by the LEP.
Training is available in 4 ways:
1. Deanery led short courses provided in London/other Local Education Provider Trusts (see below)
2. Trust based training (local education provider-led sessions)
3. Deanery led short teaching and learning courses accessible at www.faculty.londondeanery.ac.uk
4. E-learning packages e.g. e-learning for health accessible at www.e-lfh.org.uk and London Deanery/Faculty Development self-directed training for assessors available from this website.
N.B. Remember to log in so that a certificate is generated. For all e learning packages please complete the self declaration form (on this website) and forward to your TPD/Postgraduate Centre Manager for verification and signing. Your name will then be added to the list of approved assessors of Foundation Doctors held by Trust. The completed form should be kept in the assessors portfolio.
