Faculty Development - Clinical Teacher Bursaries - FAQs

Who is eligible for a London Deanery Clinical Teacher Bursary?
The spirit of the bursary scheme is to support individuals who are members of the Deanery’s wider educational network i.e. those clinicians who are acting as direct agents of London Deanery providing education and training.   Applications will normally be considered from the following groups: educational supervisors, clinical supervisors, training programme directors, directors of medical education, trainees on London Deanery training programmes and other individuals involved in training for or on behalf of the London Deanery on a regular basis.

Can I apply for a bursary before registering and paying a course fee?
Yes.  If you submit your completed bursary application form to us first we can give you a 'decision in principle'.  If the bursary is approved you can submit your receipts confirming proof of payment afterwards, and the bursary repayment will be organised at that point.

I am training London Deanery trainees but am working in a neighbouring Deanery – am I eligible for a bursary?
Unfortunately not.  The scope and funding of the bursary scheme is limited to improving the quality of clinical teaching in London Trusts.  Other deaneries may offer similar arrangements.

What kinds of activities does the bursary support?
The focus for the bursary scheme is on educational development.  The four main topic areas covered by the scheme are clinical supervision, educational supervision, working with groups and educational management and leadership.  For further details please refer to the Faculty Development website.  The primary focus for courses claimed must be on educational practice and applications where the emphasis of the course or programme undertaken is on the development of clinical knowledge or skills, are unlikely to be successful.

Who should I ask to ‘sponsor’ my bursary application?
Your sponsor should be someone who can verify that you are significantly involved in postgraduate training on behalf of London Deanery.  This should be someone with a designated postgraduate educational role who knows you well.  This might be your Director of Medical Education, Clinical Tutor or an Associate Dean or Director.

Can my Trust/employee claim the bursary on my behalf?

Unfortunately not.  The bursary scheme has been set up and designed to support individuals.  Individual applicants must apply for the bursary and pay the course/conference fee themselves for the Deanery to then reimburse the individual directly.
