Fellowships in Medical Education (FME)

The Faculty Development Unit of London Deanery funds and supports the Fellowships in Medical Education scheme.  These unique posts offer an exciting opportunity for Specialty Registrars to develop their experience and skills as medical educators.  Fellowships consist of an out of programme experience (OOPE) for a period of 6 months attached to an ‘education unit’ within a London NHS Trust. There are currently two intakes per year for FME placements, 6 placements per cohort.  Posts are available for February-April or August-October 2011 starts*. (*start dates negotiable within this window)

The posts are open to Specialty Registrars in run-through training and employment will be through the Trust where the Fellowship is hosted.  Payment will be at the relevant point of the specialty training scale. Medical Education Fellows can expect to take part in regular Trust based teaching activities, attend monthly seminars at the London Deanery, attend/teach on London Deanery Faculty Development courses, and have a designated educational mentor.  The attachment will also include one day per week clinical training in the specialty of their choice, to be arranged in agreement with the Host Trust.  Fellows will also receive support to undertake Masters level studies in Clinical Education.

For 2011 onwards, and subject to the ongoing availability of funding, the FME posts are available at the following London Trusts:

  • Barts and the London NHS Trust
  • Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation
  • Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust
  • North Middlesex University Hospital Trust
  • North West London Hospitals Trust
  • South London and the Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust

Recruitment for the placements is done in one round for all twelve placements available in the following year.  The opportunities are usually announced in June/July of each year, with Selection interviews around September time.
