Annual Review of Competence Progression (ARCP) e-module
The Annual Review of Competence Progression (ARCP) e-module has been newly developed by the London Deanery to help achieve consistency across ARCP panels in light of the future inclusion of revalidation along with an increasing focus on the high risk ARCP process.
The E-Learning module is video-clip-based and fully interactive. It includes four training modules, each lasting less than 10 minutes. The modules cover:
- What is the Annual review for?
- Preparation and inputs to trainee Annual Review
- How should decisions be made?
- What are the outcomes of the trainee Annual Review?
Completion of the module is mandatory for all ARCP panel members and must be take by 1st April 2012.

Performance in Practice DVD
‘Managing the trainee in difficulty' is a task that can cause considerable anxiety for postgraduate medical educators. But there are a few principles and some simple tools that can help. These are covered on the Performance in Practice DVD that is now available via Synapse, the communications network for postgraduate medical education in London. The DVD is a learning resource targeted at educational and clinical supervisors. The content of this short interactive, video-based programme includes:
• recognising the trainee in difficulty
• common presentations
• diagnosis
• immediate management

ABC of Teaching and Learning
A superb collection of practical guides to teaching in medicine aimed at practitioners who will have to teach in a clinical setting, and relevant to all qualified health professionals. Each chapter was published as a ‘Clinical Review’ in the BMJ in 2003 and individual articles are now available as free downloads
Teaching on the Run
The Teaching on the Run Tips series was developed by the University of Western Australia and has since been published in the Medical Journal of Australia. The 14 Tips cover a wide range of clinical teaching topics and form an accessible guide that incorporate educational theory, practical information and ideas for implementation. Each topic is of high interest to doctors who are teaching in their practice. Intrinsic to the resource is the recognition that the clinical environment provides enormous opportunities for effective experiential learning. See all 14 topics
Twelve Tips
This excellent series has been running since 1987 and includes practical and extremely helpful articles on all aspects of medical education from improving bedside side teaching to developing professional attitudes and designing short courses. Articles appear regularly in Medical Teacher and can be ordered from your local Postgraduate Centre library. See the Medical Teacher website for full details.
AMEE Education Guides
This series of guides published by the Association for Medical Education in Europe (AMEE) cover important topics in medical and healthcare professions education and provides information, practical advice and support. The guides have been logically structured for ease of reading and contain useful take-home messages. Text boxes highlight key points and examples in practice. Each page in the guide provides a column for personal annotations, stimulated either by the text itself or the additional quotation. Sources of further information on the topic are provided in the reference list and biography. For each guide, supplements will be prepared that provide additional examples and contributions relating to the topic. The guides can be ordered from www.amee.org.
Teaching Perspectives Inventory
The Teaching Perspectives Inventory is a short questionnaire that will help you identify your prevailing attitudes and beliefs about teaching. The questionnaire takes about 10 minutes to complete.
