The Academy of Medical Educators

25 Oct 2007

The Academy of Medical Educators is the professional organisation for all involved in the education and training of medical students and doctors. Established in 2006, the Academy exists to provide leadership, promote standards and support all those involved in the academic discipline of medical education.

Excellence in medical education and educational research is vital to the development of current and future health care professionals and, importantly, patient care and safety.  With the expansion of medical schools, developments in postgraduate medical education and the acknowledged role of education and training for clinical governance, there is no better time to develop your skills as a teacher and educator.  If you have a role or are interested in contributing to the future of medical education, then the Academy of Medical Educators will offer the professional support you need.

The Academy will also assist you in providing evidence of your own expertise and achievement in medical education by producing an agreed national standard for the accreditation of medical teachers.  The Academy is dedicated to developing career pathways for specialist teachers (both medical and non medical) in medical education.  It will encourage enquiry into teaching methods and educational research.

What will the Academy mean for me?

The Academy will provide you with formal opportunities to demonstrate your expertise and achievements in medical education through specialist certification, accreditation and on-going reaccreditation during your career as a medical teacher to an agreed national standard.

How will medical educators obtain specialist accreditation?

This is a major function of the Academy and detailed plans for a curriculum and continuing professional development are being drawn up by a group led by Professor Richard Hays and Dr Andrew Long.  Accreditation routes have yet to be determined and are likely to include a range of methods including for example, production of a learning portfolio, demonstration of teaching capability, or peer observation of teaching.

Will there be specialist certification like a CCT?

The Academy is working with PMETB and the GMC to develop a specialist curriculum leading to sub-specialisation in Medical Education.

I want to be a specialist chest physician and a medical teacher - can I join?
Yes of course! The qualification obtained in joining the Academy and on going reaccreditation of your teaching will be useful for the development of your specialist career and valuable within NHS appraisal discussions.
