Enhancing Teaching – New Pilot Project

While teaching is an integral responsibility of the work of every consultant, few have the opportunity to develop their teaching skills to complement their clinical expertise.  Consequently the Deanery has created a new pilot project to assist clinicians to enhance their teaching skills in workplace settings. ‘Education Mentors’ have been appointed to provide 1:1 support for consultants and SpRs through a series of observations of their teaching activities and aspects of their teaching identified by the consultant. Those who participate in the project will have the opportunity to discuss their teaching after each observed session with their Education Mentor and eventually receive a confidential report on their teaching over the series of the three observed sessions.

The project is in its early stages. Fours schools have been invited to participate to represent a range of different teaching settings. Only a few consultants from each school are involved in the pilot project, but the learning that will be generated from the experiences of those involved will help shape the programme to be offered across the Speciality and Foundation Schools of the Deanery.

This initiative will complement other elements of the London Deanery’s Professional Development Framework to meet the PMETB’s Standards for Trainers.

If you would like to learn more about the project or have ideas you would wish to contribute in the development of the programme please contact Geoff Wykurz at: GWykurz@londondeanery.ac.uk
