Diversity Case Study Four
Case study four: suggested answer
Issues/principles
- We always want to respect the values and perspective of others. However, in this context there are certain ‘non-negotiables’ we need to consider.
- Students are required to treat all people with respect. This includes course colleagues, tutors and patients, regardless of any aspect of their social identity.
- Your organisation has an equality policy which covers all employees and students and requires them not to discriminate on any aspect of social identity including sexuality. Refusing to acknowledge their colleague’s sexuality could be considered discriminatory.
- There is a legal framework around sexuality that would prevent an individual directly treating someone less favourably on the grounds of their sexuality.
- As a practical way forward you may want to meet with the individual and discuss your concerns with them and your expectations regarding their future behaviour.
