Elisabeth Paice Awards for Educational Excellence

In 2010, 2011 and 2012 the London Deanery (now incorporated as part of Health Education England), presented the Elisabeth Paice Awards for Educational Excellence in order to identify and reward those making outstanding commitment and contributions to postgraduate medical and dental education in London.  Over 170 applications were received across 6 categories in the three years. A list of Winners and Highly Commended awards can be found below. 

 

Best Secondary Care Department or Unit 2012

Winner - Eye Department, St Thomas' Hospital, Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust

Highly Commended - Homerton Simulation Centre, Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust

Winners - The Eye Department at St Thomas' Hospital

Guys and St Thomas’ Eye Department has established a range of activities that promote quality in teaching and learning. Examples include: promoting the use of the Deanery’s Professional Development Framework for Supervisors, enabling teaching to be interprofessional and learner-driven, with trainees from various disciplines deciding topics, and also developing new resources to transform electronic learning into experiential e-learning (so-called ee-learning).

 

Highly Commended - Homerton Simulation Centre

The Homerton Simulation Centre has expanded their portfolio of courses which include re-creation of serious incidents and complex scenarios. They are undertaking research to explore the long term benefits of their courses on decision making and have collected data validating that the scenarios they have developed are realistic. The GMC survey results demonstrate improvement in trainee satisfaction rates.

Best Postgraduate Medical or Dental Education Administration Team 2012

Winners - The King's PGMDE Team

King’s Postgraduate Medical and Dental Education Management Team comprises of Administrators, Director/Associate Directors, Clinical Facilitators, and Faculty members. As a Lead Provider they have used a multi-professional team approach to reach out across many disciplines within Kings and other trusts in the sector through the Simulation Centre and also the establishment of a Leadership training programme delivered in collaboration with Keele University. Evaluations for these programmes from participants and faculty have been very positive.

Highly Commended - The Sheila Sherlock Education Centre Team

The Sheila Sherlock Education Centre, Royal Free. The centre’s administration team aim to support trainees through dedicated pastoral care, and friendly efficient service with a positive, problem-solving attitude. Related initiatives include: regular review of trainees progress through survey monkey questionnaires; a ‘new starters meeting’ with the chief executive and senior management, and a forum allowing junior doctors to present improvement initiatives to the trust executive committee.

Best Primary Care Team (GP, Dental) 2012

Winner - Glebe Road Surgery, Richmond Primary Care Trust

Highly Commended - Dr Neville Pursell and Partners, Paddington Green Health Centre

Winners - The team from Glebe Road Surgery

Glebe Road Surgery has designed a prototype multi-professional community education hub with the ethos that teaching and learning is everyone’s business. Non-clinical and attached community staff are all enthusiastic supporters and participants in this approach. Trainees benefiting from this approach include: Physician Assistants, F2 doctors, GP registrars, and Darzi fellows, all with appropriately targeted supervision. Student clinical psychologists and health visitors are also hosted at the Surgery with their co-located qualified supervisors.   

Dr Jonathan Botting from the Glebe Road Surgery, Richmond Primary Care Trust, (winnders in the Best Primary Care Team, GP, dental category) said, "It was a real thrill to win such a prestigous award and we were delighted to have both our practice manager and lynch-pin, Sue Bell and our current F2 with us. It couldn't have been a more appropriate time and place for our practice to be recognised for supporting multi-professional training in the community as that so clearly alins with the main message from the conference.

 

Highly Commended - Dr Neville Pursell and Partners team

Dr Neville Purssell and Partners have a strong ethos of multidisciplinary working, applying educational research to practice to enhance teaching. Weekly multidisciplinary meetings are held that include:  Macmillan nurses, Paediatrics outreach, and the Community Mental Health Team. The whole multidisciplinary team are involved in the induction programme for new trainees to promote on-going interprofessional relationships and learning.

Best Faculty Development Programme 2012

Winner - Training Tomorrow's Trainers Today (T4): North West London, Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust/Central and North West London NHS Foundation Trust

Highly Commended - Paediatric Faculty Development Subgroup, St Mary's Hospital, London School of Paediatrics

Winners - The team from Imperial and Central and North West London

Imperial College / Central and North West Foundation Trust‘s programme ‘Training Tomorrow’s Trainers Today’ is an innovative, sector-wide sustainable faculty development initiative that is clinically focused, collaboratively designed and delivered through a cross-speciality faculty. Impact assessment has demonstrated improvements in supervision and the learning environment. External evaluators observed that this Lead Provider initiative has led to improved quality of training through the creation of sector-wide educational networks.

Highly Commended - Members of the Paediatric Faculty Development Subgroup

London School of Paediatrics, London Deanery have developed RIPPLE –the Regional Integrated Programme for Paediatric Local Educators – an educational package designed to enable paediatricians to deliver high quality local teaching and training. Local paediatric senior trainees and consultants have become educational champions and innovators within their sector of the School of Paediatrics. Related activities include: ongoing action learning sets, project work, and the establishment of regional networks for teaching.

Best Clinical Leadership Development Initiative 2012

Winner - Clinical Leadership Development Programme, West Middlesex University Hospital NHS Trust

Highly Commended - Today's Doctors, Tomorrow's Leaders, Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust

Winners - The team from West Middlesex University Hospital

West Middlesex is currently running its 5th cohort of a multi-disciplinary Leadership Course that has led to tangible organisational change. The course is modelled on the Darzi Fellowships, and combines self directed learning and application of theory to practice in a service improvement project, with mentorship support from a member of the faculty. New elements of the course include ‘experienced based co-design’ and an innovative ‘Complaints Simulation’ module based on patients’ experiences.  

Imperial College’s ‘Today’s Doctors Tomorrow’s Leaders’ initiative is an innovative work based leadership development programme created with Foundation Doctors for their peers that combines workshops with quality improvement projects in local Trusts across North West London. It aims to engage trainees early in their career to learn how to appropriately challenge inefficient or ineffective patient care. Outcomes include: setting up an Ambulatory Care Unit, and optimisation of the surgical phlebotomy service.
